After ANOTHER poor experience at the Carmike Theatre/Mercer Mall, I wrote this to the corporate office:
comment: My RECENT experiences the last few weekend have been BAD! The place is dirty, the service at ticket sales is AWFUL - machine was down, people backed out the door -one slow girl handwriting FULL name of movie on slips of paper for tickets (which also makes me wonder if you may have a theft and or /embezzlement possibly happening. Went to early show and the restrooms looked like thay had not been cleaned all week? Floor in theatre was very sticky from spilled sodas. I have been there past 3 weeks in a row and it is really bad. I just tried to call to get the shows for this weekend and now even the recording is not working. What gives? Seems like things have really gone down hill, at a fast pace, for the last few months. HELP!
This was the response I got: Thank you for contacting Carmike Cinemas. I’m very sorry that you have a problem at the theatre in Bluefield. We did have a ticket printer down recently and were only running one which did cause back ups at the box office. I was in this theatre the weekend after your complaint and the restrooms were clean and we had gotten a ticket print back in working order. We are working hard to make sure the level of cleanliness and customer service is high at this theatre. We know that you have a choice in your movie entertainment and we appreciate you choosing Carmike Cinemas.
Sincerely, Nancy McCarter District Manager
We went again, the following weekend. The place was a mess by the 7:00/7:30 show. I can only imagine the condition by the 9:00/9:30 (late) shows.
I have been to the movies at Wytheville and Beckley. Both are owned by Marquee Theatre, in Beckley. Did you know this business started in WV (Rainelle) and has grown to a very large corporation!
I will ask that if you are an adult and no longer go or seldom go to the movies here at Mercer Mall for similar reasons, please contact the corporate office and voice your opinion! Maybe someone will take a closer look at the real reasons!
My advice: If you can afford the GAS and a MOVIE - drive to Wytheville or Beckley. At least you are still supporting the local economy and a WV Business! Since Mercer Mall is not in Bluefield city limits, guess it is 6 of one or half-dozen of the other.....

This is interesting. I also travel to Beckley or Wytheville, or even Abington (the Cinemall rocks down there) to catch a movie. I've been super disgusted with the sorry excuse of a theatre Carmike runs at Mercer Mall. I haven't been there in so long, and this is why. I ask people who frequent, and they never have good news. In fact, I think the last time I was there was to see Star Wars Episode I. How long ago was that??? Near ten years I think.
I remember for a brief time there was a myspace made to complain about this theater. It mysteriously vanished after being up for a few weeks. Strange eh?
I know the district office gets lots of complaints. What else can we do???

It's funny that this topic came up - I was just complaining about how horrible this theater is! The seats are horrible, the bathrooms are disgusting, and the floors are always sticky. But what else can us movie lovers do? With gas being so expensive you almost have to take out a loan between driving to 30 minutes to see a movie, then paying for the movie, then paying to eat because you are not close enough to your home to go home and eat.... It sucks... I have no other educated phrase to describe it... It just sucks.

Guess if you have not been there in 10 years, nor given them other chances to redeem themselves, would be hard to judge for the here and now. But, for the other comments which are in agreement with mine, I agreed, as well said "It sucks".
I hope we can get some others to comment on this site. If so, I plan to forward them to the district manager who attempted to reply to my comments, while ignoring several issues.

Last time the old Blue-Prince was open, providing $1.00 day time movies - we had a heat wave.
I had a friend who would go there and sleep through two movies - good deal for $2.00-almost 4 hours of AC! Funny! (They worked early shift and did not have AC at home).
Maybe we should all get together - get some backers and reopen it. I know who currently owns it and I am s ure that would love to do something with it!
HEY _ Maybe we could reopen the old Ponderosa into something NICE, or open a rest. near the Bingo Parlors!
Again, it is outside of Bluefield, WV - but could still support Mercer County!
P.S. I can cook!

That may be true, but I have friends and family that go to the movies a lot. Every time they go, I ask them about their experience and it is ALWAYS negative. So, their feedback to me effects my decision to go. It would be good for corporate to hear that as well.
You can cook eh? What are you thinking???

I can cook anything. My daughter would love for me to open a restaurant. I just never been at a place in my life where I could afford to do so - ...so, I have a regular job with benefits and retirement, company car, etc. as the trade off.
I have a great idea - even semi-wrote a business plan a while back - maybe my oldest daughter will do it! Can't give away all my secrets here!
I was in the theatre in Wytheville today. It sure is nice - only thing bad is a bad designed parking lot. The engineery must have slept through that class in college!
Heading to see THE OTHER BOLNYN GIRL THIS WEEKEND - questions is where?

I have not been to the mercer mall theatre since the 2nd harry potter movie. the bluefield telegraph had qouted the wrong start time and i went and purchased my ticket, walked into the theatre only to find that the movie had already began. i went back to the box office to see if i could change my ticket for the next show and she sent me to the mangager's office. the office door was open and the manager's back was toward me. i knocked, no response. knocked again, no response. i politely said excuse me and she turned around and asked what i needed. i explain the situation to her. she said "wait a minute", walked out of her office and down the hall and came back with a security gaurd who then escorted me out of the building. i was neither rude nor irrate with this woman. i didnt even get refunded. i have not and will not walk thru the doors of that theatre again! a good evening out at the movies for me is the new cinema in welch. very friendly, clean, reclining stadium seating and great sound. (not to mention if you leave bluefield early enough you can stop over at starlight drive in for an excellent dinner. i suggest the starlight sub! its like thanksgiving dinner on a deep fried french bun!
